A PRESBYTERIAN TRIBUTE
SERVICE IN ST. DAVID’S - , CHURCH Praise of Mr Savage’s qualities, “which even those who strongly opposed his political views could admire,” was expressed by the Rev. L. M. Rogers at a service last evening at-St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Sydenham. “It is not too much to say that one of .the main reasons why his party achieved success at the last poll was the extraordinary hold his personality had upon the community, said Mr Rogers. “This was due to two outstanding characteristics. On the one hand he was obviously sincere, believing passionately in the political and sociological principles which guided the policies of his party. On the other hand he was a'man of the people and never lost touch with them. His spirit was humanitarian, and even the mistakes he made—as all men make mistakes —were due to his passionate devotion to the well-being of men. “It was these, qualities in him that made him a leader. Even his political adversaries never became his personal enemies. They could not agree with his political theories, but they could not out admire his loyalty to them, nor the emotional sympathy with unfortunate people that made some of those theories necessary to him. Whatever political convictions you and I may hold we can honestly join in mourning the passing of one who gave his life to his cause, and who, even in his last hours, spent his energies in the L performance of his duties."
