MADDISON CUP PLAY FINALS THIS WEEK Twenty-nine players participated In the Maddison Trophy matches for the Christchurch Bowling Centre's singles championship which began on Saturday on the Edgeware and Barrington greens. The players included two previous winners, H. B. Oakey (Elmwood) and J. C. Simpson (Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club). F. Steans (Opawa), who won last year, is not competing. In the first round on the Edgeware green, the keenest struggle took place between A. Kingston (Akaroa) and A. Clark (Barrington). ' After the nineteenth head the scores were 16-all. In the next head Kingston gained a single point lead, and in the last head robbed his opponent of victory by splitting two shots lying close to the kitty, and gaining the shot himself with his last bowl. Clark failed to connect with his last shot. Three rounds were played in the afternoon. The finals will be played during the week between Christchurch and United and Woodend and Shirley. RANGIORA BEATS KAIAPOI IN SHIELD MATCH Rangiora beat Kaiapoi by three games to two in,the annual interborough bowls match played at Rangiora on Saturday afternoon as part of the Mclntosh Shield competition. The match was a close one and the result was in doubt until the second to last bowl was played. Details were as follows, Rangiora skips mentioned first:— Banfield 16, S.
