HAWARDEN SHOW

EXCELLENT CORRIEDALE DISPLAY The Ha warden Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show, held on Saturday, was by all standards a most successful fixture. Entries were a record, the standard of the entries was very high, and the association was lucky enough to pick a perfect day. The show was notable particularly for the exceptionally high standard reached in the Corriedale sheep I classes, where competition was very strong, and some outstanding sheep were exhibited. The district is the home of the Corriedale, and a good display of the breed could have been expected, but the judges were delighted with the sheep set before them. The show was again notable for the strength of the light horse classes, which were well filled, and keenly contested, many of the entrants being well used to show work at the Metropolitan and other fixtures. G. J. H. Reid took the ram and ewe championships in the merino section, and annexed most of the other principal prizes in that section, which was well filled. Tire champion ram was an excellent example of the breed. The same breeder also took the halfbred ewe championship, J. Inkson showing the champion ram. The most keenly contested classes were those for Corriedales, where, though competition was confined to half ■ a dozen or so breeders, all the classes were well filled. The ram championship was won by D. and M. Sidey and Sons, who had a very strong team of sheep on show. Their champion ram was a magnificent example of the breed, well framed, and carrying a most impressive fleece. The ewe championship went to G. R. Macdonald, with an aged sheep of the highest quality. The older rams were exceptionally good, as were the twotdbths, among which there were some outstanding sheep. The hoggets were not quite as strong, particularly the pairs, which showed some unevenness. As a whole, the ewe .classes were fully up to the standard of a metropolitan show. The Southdown classes were also well filled, and here again the standard reached would stand comparison with any of the bigger shows. The champion ram was shown by H. E. Fincham, who also took the ewe ribbon. The light horses were well up to the high standard set by previous Hawardeiv shows, and all classes were well filled. The champion harness horse was Miss J. Anderson’s Quickfire. The ladies’ hack event was won from a big field by Miss R. Little’s Trouble Maker. • Among the ponies. Mrs A. G. Black’s Wee Gaiety won the harness championship, and Miss B. Thomson’s Fire Gleam won the saddle championship. , In every department, the show was a particularly successful fixture. The people of. the district are great supporters of their show, and the result is seen in well-contested competitions in every section. The arrangements went off without a hitch, and the thoroughness with which preparations had been made would do credit to considerably more ambitious shows.
