NURSING THROUGH THE AGES

INTERESTING PAGEANT Financial success beyond the expectations of its organisers attended the garden party, arranged by the student nurses at the Christchurch Hospital, and held in the hospital grounds on Saturday afternoon. Sir Hugh Acland formally opened the party, of which the proceeds —a most gratifying sum—will be devoted to the interests of army nurses. Many stall-holders quickly sold out their entire stocks, exciting side-shows were well patronised, and an exhibition tennis match, played by Misses Heather Elsom and Joan Peake, and Messrs Colin Penfold and Malcolm Corich, was greatly enjoyed. Most interesting was the wellplanned pageant—“ Nursing Through the Ages”—staged by the nurses, depicting the evolution of nursing from its most primitive stages to its present professional status. A medicine man, Hygea. Fabiolia. St. Francis of Assisi, a Knight hospitaller, a Sister of Charity or Nursing Sister, Florence Nightingale, Sarah Gamp, an early hospital nurse a present day hospital nurse, staff nurse, and army nurse all figured in this informative parade. Patrons were entertained at tea m a marquee and the spirited music of the military band from the Burnham camp enlivened the gathering. The nurses carried out all the preparations in a fortnight and they are most grateful for the great help given them by many supporters.
