UNIVERSITY SENATE URGES ESTABLISHMENT (PBESS ASSOCIATIOa TEMGHAM.)

WELLINGTON, January 17.

A report of the committee appointed to consider the desirability of establishing a veterinary college in the Dominion was before the University Senate yesterday. . * Presenting it, MrL;;J. Wild said that, at a very 'conservative estimate, the Dominion required 240 veterinarians, including about 40 for inspectional and research, -work under the Department of Agriculture. Twelve-" to 15 students would be required to pass through the school each year to keep- up the supply. The Government at present provided money to send suitable'persons to Australia to be trained. The cost of the building he set down at £50,000 to £75,000, with an annual cost for maintenance and payment of lecturers, etc., at £IO,OOO. The report suggested that the institution should be connected with a School of Agriculture in preference to the Medical School. The Chancellor (the Hon. .J. A. Hanan) questioned if jt was a reasonable time to approach the Government on the subject, seeing how : scarce money was, although undoubtedly they would like to see the scheme estab-, lished.

Dr. H. G* Denham suggested that they should stress the necessity of the scheme rather than press for an immediate establishment. The Dominion lost annually between £2,000,000 and £4,000,000 through animal disease. In adopting the report/ the Senate affirmed the principle that a school of veterinary science should be established in connexion with an agricultural college.
