ADDINGTON MARKET

Keen Store Lamb Sale FAT EWE VALUES EASIER

STORE SHEEP Much the largest entry of the season was forward in the store section, the bulk comprising 'iambs. Some pens were practically ready for the works and these naturally sold at high prices, but the market generally, as a result of the improved feed prospects, recorded a sharp advance. Apart from the outstanding pens the average of the rape sorts was better than a week ago by 2s 6d a head. The market throughout was surrounded by a big circle of buyers. The best price of the season was secured for a pen of 162 three-quarterbred wether lambs in very forward condition. They were sold on account of R. R. Furze (Mount Vernon), and realised 21s. Singularly enough, 166 ewe lambs of the same owner's draft sold at 19s 6d, a reversal of the usual order of things. A pen of 199 wether lambs from the Australian Land Company (Moeraki) sold at 19s. Two pens of 76 and 75 respectively of Corriedale ewe lambs from J. D. Renney (Kirwee) -sold at 19s 9d and 18s 3d respectively. Just on €OOO head of lambs were offered. Except for several .lines of wethers there was not much else in the store market. A pen of 503 four and six-tooth three-quarterbred wethers sold at 16s, and another of 607 four and sixrtooth half-

bred at 16s 4d. Most of the buying strength, however, was confined to the lamb entry, and a number of small pens of ewes failed to meet vendors' ideas of values, and were passed. Sales were:— Lambs—74 halfbred wether at 12s 2d, 91 at 18s, 157 at 16s 9d, 90 at 16s lOd, 55 at 13s 6d, 146 at 17s, 98 forward at 18s, 149 at 16s 6d, 98 at 16s 6d, 73 at lis, 182 at 16s Bd, 88 at 12s, 65 m.s. cull at Bs, 199

Quality yesterday was not quite as good as was the case at last sale.

There was an exceptionally keen demand. Exporters, one company in particular, competed actively, and their purchases were all at full schedule rates or a shade more in cases. The trade accordingly had to pay upwards of BJd per lb for good lamßs. The yarding totalled 2100, compared with 1400 last week, and a bare 600 at the previous sale. FAT SHEEP The entry in the fat sheep section comnrised slightly more than 5000 nead, about 1000 more than at last sale. There was again a shortage of wethers Included in the penning were a number of pens from the Chatham Islands The market for the small proportion of prime vJettvers was firm at the best of last week s rates but some lines of moderately conditioned station wethers showed an easing. Heavy ewes, particularly the plainer sorts, and light-medium., were .in too jbig; supply for the demand, and were down by about 2s 6d a head. Light ewes for export, however, showed only a very minor easing"export representatives buying this ci a ss g fa!rly freely, and paying close on the good rates of a week ago. Jhere were a few passings in the final stages of the sale. . . : Values were as under.— Extra prime heavy wethers, to 34s Id. Prime heavy wethers. 30s to 3^s.

The entry of sheep at yesterday's market was the largest of the season and the attendance of farmers the biggest of the year. The total sheep entry approximated 15,000 head, of which about half were in the store pens. The improvement in fattening feed prospects as a result of the recent rains created a strong sale for rape lambs, which advanced by 2s 6d a head. Fat lambs also sold at a slight advance for a larger entry. Fat sheep sold irregularly, good wethers maintaining values of last week, but most ewes, notably heavy and light medium, being easier by up to 2s 6d a head. Export ewes showed little change. The small proportion of prime steers sold better in the cattle market, but an over-supply of cows sold at easier rates.

FAT CATTLE The entry in the fat cattle section was about the same as that. of last week, numbering 441 head as against 432. There was a big difference in quality, however, the larger proportion of the entry yesterday comprising old and very ordinary cows, which should have been relegated to the store pens, where they would have sold better. For the small proportion, of good prime steers and the best of the cows and heifers there was a sound sale at the best of last week's, rates to 10s. a head better The bulk of the cows, on the other hand, were easier, and the inferior classes met with a slack sale, being, down bv about 10s a head.
