OCEAN YACHT RACE

EVENT WON BY TAWHIRI RAUKAWA GAINS SECOND PLACE [THE PRESS Special Service] WELLINGTON, January 15. Tawhiri (Nelson), sailed by its owner, Noel Brown, has won the centennial ocean yacht race from Lyttelton to Wellington, which started at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Tawhiri arrived at 11.46 p.m. on Sunday. The only other yacht to • finish by 9 p.m to-day was Raukawa (Wellington), which arrived at 12.41 p.m. to-day. Tawhiri had a handicap of 2hr 33min and Raukawa of 7hr 3min. Had Senorita (Lyttelton), the limit, boat, arrived by 5.15 p.m. to-day, she would have tied for first place with Tawhiri, but she put into Kaikoura, Mandalay (Wellington) and Southern Light (Bluff) abandoned the race on Sunday and entered Wellington under power. Arawa (Nelson) put into Port Underwood with a split mainsail, and Tucana (Lyttelton), into Kaikoura on Sunday with a broken, main boom.
