VISIT TO NORTHERN GAMPS
ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION AT AUCKLAND
• (PEE S3 ASSOCIATION TEXEGSAM.) Auckland. January 2. Troops of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force: encamped in the northern military district met, their commanding officer, Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., at parades at the Hopuhopu and Papakura Camps today. Both parades were carried through in a manner which proved that the raw recruits of a few months ago have now become very fine soldiers, and General Freyberg expressed great' satisfaction with what he saw at both camps. Even after an extremely busy day, General Freyberg and his staff had no respite.. They left immediately for Auckland to attend a civic reception before catching the Limited express for Wellington. With enthusiasm that was ■ remarkable an audience of 3000 at the civic-reception at the . Town Hall greeted and paid tribute to General Freyberg, who spent a little more than two hours in the city. It was necessary for the civic reception to be tendered at 6 p.m., where he was received with the general salute by a guard of 40 veterans of the Great War under Captain Judson, V.C. The two Victoria Cross holders exchanged a long and hearty handshake, and spoke for a few • minutes before the inspection. Proceedings at the civic reception were very enthusiastic.
