NEW ZEALANDMADE GOODS
—•» MINISTER PRAISES QUALITY EQUIPMENT OF SPORTS CHAMPIONS “To win the open golf championship of New Zealand is something the victor may be proud to do, but when a New Zealander wins it using clubs made in the country there is a greater degree of satisfaction than ever,” said the Hon. D. G. Sullivan (Minister for Industries and Commerce) yesterday. “This year’s . championship was played in very trying weather," tinned the Minister, "and the quality of the clubs was severely tested. The New Zealand championship was also won by player using New Zealandmade equipment. At New Plymouth the badminton title was won with a racket made in Auckland. "It may not generally be known that one New Zealand firm exports tennis rackets which meet with a ready demand in overseas countries. Tennis racket gut, manufactured in this country, is graded very high. Many leading tennis players, who participate in the New Zealand championships. have' their rackets specially strung for this gruelling test with New Zealand gut. "It is not generally known that Wellington engineers designed the only measure that satisfactorily measures petrol, that gives the exact amount delivered from the pump whether the supply is low or high. New Zealanders can. and do, produce articles that for ouality and workmanship equal anything that can be procured anywhere. The industrial activities of the country can be developed to an even greater degree than they are, and, while much has been achieved in the last year or two I think we will see still greater advances“To list the new factories that have teen erected and to recite the list of factories that have been extended would take some time, but one thing Is certain; there are more people gainfully employed in manufacturing in New Zealand to-day than at any other time in our history.. The call for greater production must be answered by all sections of the community because our national wealth Is represented in our national production. If,; then, we would continue to enjoy a high standard of living—and there is no valid reason why we should not do so—we must produce to capacity in every field of endeavour”
