SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs P. Ruston and family are spending a holiday in Christchurch. Miss Helen F. Smith (“Waratah,” Fairlie), who spent Christmas with Mrs Godfrey Rutherford (4‘Lochiel,” North Canterbury), will stay with Mrs Menzies (Menzies’ Bay) for the New Year. Dr. R. D. King and Mrs King have left for the north on holiday. Mr and Mrs H. W. Jones (Hawera) are staying with Mrs A. Jones (Beyerley road). Mrs J. E. Triggs (Ashburton) and Mrs D. B. Campbell (Hook), who were Mrs Jones’s Quests for Christmas, have returned home. Mrs A. A. Scott (Sefton street) is staying with Mrs H. R. Scott (Mayfield). Mr and Mrs H. B. Scott (Dunedin) are occupying their, flat. Mr and Mrs C. Gargill, who were guests of Miss Cargill (Waitawa). have returned to Christchurch. . Mr and Mrs J. Gillon, assisted by Mrs L. Hunt and residents of the west end, gave a farewell party to lan Gillon before he returned to camp prior to proceeding overseas with tne New Zealand Special Military Force. Mr ’Hunt presented him with a weufllled wallet as a token of esteem, and on behalf of the West End Harriers Mr L. Williams presented him with a gilt. Miss April. Hargreaves (Christchurch) is staying with Mrs A. E. Aerr, “Belmont.” Cave. GIFT PARTIES ' Miss Marjorie Cockroft, whose marriage to Mr John Darby will take place to-day, was the guest of honour at a “kitchen” gift party giyen by Miss Mollie Aburn at her fiat in Cambridge tC Amongst those present were Mrs W. E Cockroft, Misses Marjone Cockroft, Daisy Perry, Patricia Nicholas, E. Cresswell, K. Newton, R. Doric Aburn, Lesley Cockroft. Joan Hobday Miriam Harrison, Irene Hoyle, Valerie Kxoning, and E. Nairn. Misses Daisy Perry and Lesley Cockroft, who will be bridesmaids for Miss Cockroft, were hostesses at a “variety” gift party given in her honour. . _ Amongst those present were Mesdames T. W. RED CROSS SOCIETY GATHERING AT SUMNER An enjoyable‘party was given at the home of Mrs W. A. Thomas, the Esplanade, by members of the Sumner Red Cross Home Nursing Class. During the evening certificates were presented to the successful candidates by Mrs A. Murdoch, president of the Sumner branch of the Red Cross Society, who congratulsted the class on its enthusiasm and hsfrd work, and on the number that passed with honours. After suppev a presentation was made to the guest of honour Miss Gwen Fenwick, who instructed the class, and to Miss F. Cotter, who helped with the practical work. Those present included Mesdames Irwin, W. A. Thomas, Varney, McDowell, Hewstone, Greaves, Colin Thomas, Petersen, Misses Molly Staples, Queree, McKenzie, Baird, Thomas, Wood, Cotter, Sanger, Hunt, and Nurse Overton. .
