RUSSIAN STEAMER SUNK

HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE FEARED (Received December 14; 11 p.m.) TOKYO, December 14. It is feared that more than 700, including women and children, were lost when the Russian steamer Indigirka (2690 tons) sank off Hokkaido Island. The cause of the sinking is unknown. There were 1100 on board, mostly fishermen and their families. The Japanese ship Karafuto Maru rescued 390 of the passengers and crew. The Indigirka was formerly the Commercial Quaker. She was sold by the United States in 1938 to Russia.
