CENTENNIAL TREE PLANTING

proposal for peninsula j 3IEMORIALS ON ROADSIDES A ' r one of the proposals to mark the Lntennial on Banks Peninsula is the planting of trees by the roadside, but tie carrying out of this project has been held up because of the main highway reconstruction work which is going on through the district. When approached upon this subject, the Mayer of Akaroa and chairman of Hie Centennial Committee (Mr F. R. E. Davis) said the idea had not been lost sight of. The new road lines had been defined, but it would be some thne before the highway from Akaroa to Takamatua would be fenced ready for reformation to be carried out. He said that corners cut off on the Robin - Ison’s Bay and Duvauchelle Hill roads I would provide good planting areas, but the Main Highways Board had to approve of the planting of trees on roadsides and had to be assured the trees would not interfere with visibility on the highways. The plan in the Akaroa County is to plant along the highway and . that pioneer families should plant in memory of the first settlers of the district. The Wairewa County Council’s centennial memorial will take the form of tree planting, also, alongside the highway for preference, and it is proposed to spend £2OO on this planting.
