Sir,—l have just been reading ‘‘The Long White Cloud" by the late William Pember Reeves, which g contains the following figures pertaining to New Zealand’s contribution to the Allies during the Great War. Soldiers and nurses serving overseas 110.368, New Zealanders m Australian and Imperial units 3370, total overseas 113,738. In New Zealand at signing of Armistice 11,573. grand total 124.311. War losses captured by enemy, four officers, 352 other ranks, Captures by New Zealand Division. France 287 officers, 8745 other ranks, 145 guns, 1419 machihe-guns, three tanks. Captures by Mounted Rifle Brigade in Palestine, prisoners 10,332, 57 guns, 147 machine-guns, besides large quantities of railway rolling stock and ammunition. Of our army, 91,941 were volunteers and 32,370 were conscripts. Friday will see an appeal for funds to provide assistance to our new army. I trust that it will be liberally responded to, as I have no .doubt that the presentday New Zealand soldier will acquit himself a§ creditably as those ' who went before him.—Yours, etc., _ • .
