COMMUNISM IN NEW ZEALAND

TO THE EDITOR Off THE PRESS, Sir, —-Im "The Press" this morning. I notice a letter on the above subject by one who sets out to give your readers a true, dinkum, and straight from the horse’s mouth definition of Communism, And concerning this, it so happens that yesterday I received from overseas a publication m which a correspondent gives “his” views of Communism and a few other “isms,’ and as I really think they are a great improvement, both as regards understandability and brevity, on those advanced by your correspondent, I pass them on with slight alterations, and with apologies to the overseas journal in question. "Socialism: You have two cows; you give one to your neighbour. Communism: You have two cows; you give both to the Government and it gives you some 6t the milk. Fascism: You have two cows; you keep both, give the milk to the dovernment and the Government sells the milk to you, Nazism: You have two cows; the Government shoots you and takes the cows. New Deal: You have two cows: the Government shoots one. milks the other and pours the milk down the dram. Capitalism: You have two cows; you sell one and buy a bull, Douglas Credit, You have two cows, but you dont bother to milk them because the Government gives you £5 per week. And, with democracy in New Zealand, my cobber Bill says you have over 70 of the cows who milk you dry. Yours, etc., CLYDE HOAD. December 14, 1939.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l have just read a letter Jn “The Press” this morning, signed T. Christie, in which he tells us what a beautiful thing Communism is, and the blessings it is endeavouring to bring to New Zealand. This whitewashing of Communistic endeavours and principles will not deceive anyone with, the slightest knowledge of what the results would be. Russia, the home of Communism, has found after bitter experience, in. so far as millions of Russians have either died of starvation or been shot, that pure Communism did not wopk, and I understand that there has been a return to capitalism in as much as there is plenty of land to be bought by the private individual, and further service is now paid for by its worth; this is a distinct go back from Communistic ideas and principles. —Yours, etc., THIRTy PERCHES. December 14, 1939. [Subject to the right of reply of “On-looker”-this correspondence is now closed,—Ed., "The Press,’’]
