PETROL SAVING

. TO THB EDITOR OF TBR FREES, Sir.—l should UKe to appeal to the householders of New Zealand on behalf of a deserving section of the community. Our postmen, by regulation, are not allowed to deliver mail over a specified distance from the street. We cheerfully hunt in the front for our dally paper. Both the postman and the-newspaper runner get a spell on Sundays and special holidays, yet we expect the milkman 365 days a year to run two 'chains’ in arid out, on the average, open various doors, contend with obstacles, dogs, etc;, and ’plant the milk on the back door step and smile. > The two-chain run on 365 days means an unnecessary distance of nine miles and loss of energy and time, wear of running shoes and waste of petrol, while he does it. Would any other section of the community ,dq it? No, some go on strike if one of their number gets discharged. Where would we the consumers be if every time a milkman lost a customer and they all stopped home till he got his customer back. Yet we expect those who work the longest hours and all the days of the year and are subject to the vagaries of the weather, to run hundreds of unnecessary miles for their money just because we, are tqo indifferent to appreciate the good service the milkman renders us and to place a box at the nearest possible point to the footpath for his convenience. . Hoping this appeal may not fall on deaf ears and that what I'have suggested may soon be recognised as the correct thing to do.—Yours, etc,, ARTHUR XING, , September 22, '1039.
