BROADCASTS FROM THE HOUSE

“FALSE IMPRESSION CREATED”

MR BURNETT SUGGESTS RECONSIDERATION (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.! WELLINGTON, August 22. “I think that we should have another thought about the broadcasting of the proceedings of this House,” said Mr’T. D. Burnett (Opposition, Temuka) during l , the financial debate in the House of Representatives today. “I know that everyone would agree that the proper dignity of this House is in capable hands in your hands, Mr Speaker; but I find that the majority of people of the. Dominion have an entirely false conception of how this House is being carried on,” Mr Burnett said.

He explained that he had recently listened in to the House, and had been amazed at the false impression he had gained. “It gave the impression that it was a Donnybrook. and brought me back about 40 years to an upcountry race-meeting night in the local pub. or dog trial night, and I was expecting to hear a shout of ‘a bob in’,” Mr Burnett continued. He said that the House was a deliberative oody, and members did not want it to appear a cheap variety show.
