BUSINESS WOMEN’S CLUB

ADDRESS BY PROFESSOR TOCKER At the fortnightly meeting of the Business and Professional Women’s Club held at the Young Women’s Christian Association club rooms, Mrs L. G. Pocock concluded her series of talks on China.and Japan, and gave a resume of the outstanding events of recent years. Professor A. H. Tocker was the principal speaker for the evening. He gave an interesting address on some of the aspects of international conferences and recounted some of his experiences at conferences at Geneva and London. He showed how attempts were made to overcome the difficulties of language by simultaneous telephonic translations, and illustrated many of the difficulties that attended international negotiations. He said these difficulties were real and deepseated, and were due possibly to the fact that races and nations had grown up as distinct Units, but had now been thrown much closer together by the speeding up of transport and communications. There was a great necessity to recognise the innate differences of all nations and to exercise greater tolerance in order to make international relations more successful.
