FAMOUS CRICKETER DEAD
OPENING BATSMAN FOR ENGLAND TOM HAYWARD’S RECORD LONDON, July 19. The death has occurred of Tom Hayward, of Surrey, the famous English opening batsman who played in 35 tests against Australia and South Africa between 1896 and 1909. He was 68 years of age.
Altogether, Hayward scored 1999 runs in test cricket, and 43,417 tuns, including 104 centuries, in first-class cricket. Many of his best opening partnerships were shared with R. Abel and J. B. Hobbs. Probably, Hayward’s greatest feat in county cricket was the making of his hundredth century in 1913, a record at that time shared only by Dr. W. G. Grace. Jack Hobbs says of it: “Tom was luckier than I in one respect. He scored his ‘century’ century at our beloved Oval before a big crowd. Mine was made, later, before a smalliih gathering. I wall remember Tom’s wonderful reception and the crowd cheering for several minutes.”
Against Worcester in the same year, Hayward and Hobbs put on 313 for the first wicket. In 1807, Hayward made 1368 runs and took 144 wickets. His highest score against Australia in a test vfas 137 on the Oval in 1890.
