RETURNED SOLDIERS’ DEBATE • EXECUTIVE WINS ANNUAL CONTEST The annual debate for the Leadley Cun between meihbers of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association and the Returned Soldiers’ Literary and Debating Society took place on Tuesday evening in the lounge, Jellicoe Hall. In spite of the weather there was a large attendance of members and their wives and friends, to whom the president, Mr W. Wilmott, extended a hearty welcome. “That America is the hope of Democracy” was the subject debated, the Literary and Debating Society taking the affirmative. Its team was Messrs W. T. Woods (leader), G. W. Dell, and H. E. Denton. The executive was represented by Messrs D. W. Russell (leader), J. D. Godfrey, and A. E. Haynes. Mr J. D. Hutchison the Judge, gave a general survey of the debate, and a criticism of the speeches. It had been difficult to arrive at a decision, but he awarded the honours of the evening to the negative side by 67 points to 62 points. ’ , , A- vote of thanks by acclamation was accorded to Mr Hutchison for his services. At the request of Mr A. E. Haynes, president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, the judge presented the trophy, which had changed hands, to Mr Russell, leader of the winning snde. Messrs R. K. Elliott, J. Forrest, and A. Rennie were hosts at supper.
