ELLESMERE COUNTY COUNCIL
TENDERS FOR CLEARING DRAINS ACCEPTED The Ellesmere County Council gave a good deal of time at its monthly meeting to consideration of drainage in the district. Many tenders for the cleaning of drains were accepted, and applications for attention to a number of other drains were dealt with. A request from. Mr A. Boyce, Irwell, for improvements to a bridge across a drain on Hanmer road was held over for further consideration. Heavy traffic fees amounting to £149 Is lOd were received from the Christchurch City Treasurer. •
The council decided to adhere to its decision to contribute £156 toward the cost of the Canterbury court at the Centennial Exhibition. The resignation of Mr W. McVinnie as stock ranger was accepted. Mr J. A. Poulton interviewed the council on behalf of hut owners at the Rakaia mouth, with a request that a cattle-stop should be provided, in place of a gate on the road leading to the huts. He said that a large volume of motor traffic used the road at weekends. The hut-owners, said Mr Poulton, were prepared to contribute tor ward the cost. . ..
The council agreed to the provision of a cattle-stop if the request was made in writing, and that there was no opposition from the adjacent landowners.
