MOUNTAINEERING
♦ SKI CLIMBING SECTION FORMED HEADQUARTERS TO BE IN CHRISTCHURCH A decision to recommend to the New Zealand Alpine Club that the formation of a ski-mountaineering section should be undertaken was made at a meeting convened in Christchurch last night. Mr G. G. Lockwood explained .that the section would function within the framework of the New Zealand Alpine Club, with a large degree of autonomy, having full freedom to fix its own membership qualifications and the size of its subscription. Members would have the same privileges as at present were extended to full members of the Alpine Club. The. aims of the section would be to encourage the sport of ski-mountaineering and to run skimountaineering courses. For the time, being at least, the headquarters would be in Christchurch. After considerable discussion, in which it was pointed out that a qualification bar might defeat its own ends if pushed too far, it was agreed that members, in order to be elected to full membership, should have gained the third-class ski-ing certificate togther with such a record of actual ski-climb-ing as would indicate wide experience. The following were elected to the provisional committee:—Messrs G. G. Lockwood, W. Day, W. B. Myhre, E. Rich (Christchurch), J. A. Sim (Dunedin), L. Mahan (Timaru), C, N. Johnson (Wellington), R. Syme (Stratford), and R. Whitwell (Auckland).
