CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
♦ SEASON OF CHRISTCHURCH CLUB The last season had been a particularly successful one from the. points of view of membership, competitive running. and social activities, but the financial position continued to require careful attention, states the" report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Christchurch Harrier Club. With the increase in operating expenses, the very low figure of 5s for senior subscription was proving inadequate, and the committee was forced to the conclusion that a rise in tlie subscription rate was inevitable, the report comments. The club membership roll stood at the highest figure since the days before the Christchurch Club .divided up and laid the foundations of the other clubs which now existed. The figure stood at 67, with an average attendance of 46, compared with a roll of 46. and an average attendance of 32 for the previous season. The membership roll was reaching saturation point, and in the coming season members were asked to concentrate on obtaining new runners who would reinforce the racing strength of the club. There were 23 runs and races during the year. In addition to the events provided for members by the club, the club was represented in the following open events: The Kennett Cup race, the Takahe-Akaroa relay race, the Halswell race, the Canterbury cross-country championships, and the New Zealand cross-country championships. The standard of running at the Canterbury championships, held over the Cashmere course, suffered from the prevailing epidemic of sickness, several of the province's outstanding runners being unable to compete.
