SMOKE NUISANCE A complaint was recently made by the Lyttelton branch of the Labour Party to the Medical Officer of Health ,lDr. T. Fletcher Telford) about the smoke nuisance caused in southerly Weather by vessels in port, the two steamer expresses, Rangatira and IWahine, being specially mentioned. The branch maintained that the smoke Was injurious to the health of those Working on or living near the waterfront In reply, the medical officer has informed the branch that the matter had been placed before the superintendent engineer of the Union Company, with the result that, with the co-operation of the chieff engineers of the two vessels, steps •were being taken to minimise the nuisance as much as possible.
