APATHY OF LOCAL BODIES
Centennial Plans j «BIGGER PUSH COULD BE MADE ” “We have only nine months to go before we celebrate New Zealand’s one hundredth birthday, and it seems to me that some of the local bodies could make a bigger push. No one can say that the Government has not given a very good lead.” ' This statement was made at Akaroa yesterday by the Hon. W. E. Parry (Minister for Internal Affairs), when discussing Centennial celebration arrangements with the local committee. Akaroa and Westland were two localities which were deserving of every credit for their activities in arranging celebrations and for their enthusiasm in collecting money, said Mr Parry. He urged that every man, woman, and child should be appealed to to contribute something towards the cost of celebrating the centenary. The Government was giving £150,000 as its subsidy of £1 for £3 for Centennial monuments, and it considered that the people should pay for enjoying the birthday of their country. “It is easy for us to have a spread so long as we leave others to pay. But we should have sufficient loyalty to celebrate our- birthday fittingly and not leave posterity to pay for it.” ..
