DENTAL CLINICS

TREATMENT OF SCHOOL CHILDREN BENEFITS SAID NOT TO BE RECEIVED “Exacting departmental regulations are in existence and they are in need of revision,” said Mr G. Benstead at a meeting of the South Canterbury School Committees’ Association during a discussion on dental facilities for school children. “Three children out of 10 are not receiving the benefit of the dental facilities available at the Waimataitai School,” he added, “and if that is so, then there is something wrong somewhere.” -Mr Benstead said that if a child came from a district where there were no dental facilities then that child was not eligible for treatment, nor was a child who had not attended a clinic for 12 months. He considered that the association should obtain information from all the schools in the district which would or would not justify some effort being made to get treatment for all children. There were some parents who sent their children to private practitioners, but unfortunately also there were others who were callous of the rights of children to receive a very necessary service. It was decided that an effort be made to obtain all the information Mr Benstead had referred to, and having got it, to approach the Minister lor Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) about it. A letter was received from the Department of Health drawing attention to the dental clinic account being in debit to the extent of £6O, while this month another quarterly instalment was due. It was agreed to endeavour to collect accounts from committees which had not paid their accounts.
