GRANT FROM TRUST FUND BATH IMPROVEMENT SCHEME AT TEMUKA That a grant for baths improvements would be made by the Hobson Trust Fund was announced at a meeting of the Temuka Swimming Club on Wednesday evening. Mr _ Harold Cornwell, the secretary of the club, suggested that the grant be used for lengthening the baths by eight and one-third yards, to bring it to the regulation length of 33 1-3 yards, and for the construction of dressing-sheds at the western end of the baths. The amount of the grant has not yet been disclosed. After discussion it was agreed to invito the Domain Board, the Temuka. St. Joseph’s, Winchester, Milford, and Clandeboye schools to a meeting at which the proposed improvements could be considered. It was agreed that a function be held at a wind-up at the end of the season for junior and intermediate members, and that a smoke concert be held for senior members. An effort will be made to approach the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club with the view of holding a combined ball at the end of the season. WAIMATE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

EXCURSION TO BE HELD AT TIMARU The monthly meeting of the Waimate Primary School Committee was held, with Mr W, G. Paul presiding. The chairman reported that largely because of the efforts of Mr Collins, the Railway Department had made an excursion train available for to-mor-row. Final arrangements were made for the excursion to Timaru. Correspondence was received from the secretary of the Travelling Library for rural schools, and after a short discussion the, meeting agreed to continue the scheme at a cost for the year of about £2O. of which the pupils of Standard IV, Forms I and II should contribute Is a head, the committee supplying the balance. The headmaster (Mr J. L. Menzies) reported that the present roll was 482, compared with 490 at the corresponding period last year, and that the average attendance since the beginning of the year was 450, showing a percentage of about 94. the best-for some time. Reporting on swimming activities. Mr Menzies said he was convinced that in addition to the physical benefits, the swimming campaign had afforded an excellent opportunity for character development, as anyone who had watched the determined efforts of many learners would realise. He added that several who had learned this season were swimming remarkably well, as indicated by the fact that some of them' were representing the school at the South Canterbury Primary Schools’ championships on Friday.

SOCIAL AND DANCE AT W AIM ATE

MR AKD MRS D. BARNES HONOURED A pleasant function took place in the Olympia Hall, Waimate, on Wednesday evening, when, at a social and dance in honour of Mr D. Barnes, former member for Waitaki, and Mrs Barnes, Mr Barnes was presented with a wallet. Mrs Barnes was presented with a bouquet by Margaret Kelly, of Willowbridge. Mr W. G. Paul, one of the foundation members of the Waimate branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, said it was with great pleasure that he was able to express appreciation of the services given the electorate and the Dominion by Mr Barnes. He appealed to the young folk to defend their rights, privileges, and democracy as maintained by the Labour Government. Other speakers who thanked Mr Barnes for his services and offered congratulations on his recent appointment were Messrs J. A, Kearton (who contested the Temuka seat in the interests of Labour), G. Barclay (president of the Waimate branch), C, Rose (Makikihi-St. Andrews), A. Dobson (Duntroon), F, Hood (Ngapara), In making the presentation, Mr Adams (president pf the Waitaki Labour Representation Committee) said the return of the Government with 53 of the go seats spoke highly of the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage and his party. Although they regretted the loss for the time being, of their member, the fight for humanity must go on. He expressed the hope that Mr Barnes would early be returned as member for the district, and that the Government would go on from victory to vie-, tory. • Mr Barnes thanked all for the honour bestowed on Mrs Barnes and himself and especially those foundation members who had made the party what it was to-day, He expressed his desire for “another go” and said the humanitarian legislation of the Government would keep it on the Treasury benches for some time, LOYAL WAIMATE BODGE The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Waimate Lodge was presided over by p.G, Bro-1, 9- H, gchrader. One brother was reported on the sick list. Accounts for £8 4s were passed for payment.
