CORNWELL CUP
WELLINGTON WINS FIRST RACE
(?mBM ASSOCIATION TSLEOSAU.) WELLINGTON, January 15. Taking the lead soon after the start, the Wellington crew won the first of the 1D39 series of yacht races for the Cornwell Cup at Pllmmerton on Saturday by Bmln 50sec. Auckland was second and Otago third. The Plimmerton defenders capsized when running to the leeward mark the first time. The race was not very Interesting for the spectators, with the exception of a keen duel between Otago and Auckland for second place, when beating up to the weather mark for the last time. The crews sailed In their own boats for the first race, but will draw for boats for the succeeding races. The finishing times and placlngs were: Wellington, 3.56.45 p.m. .. .. 1 Auckland, 4.5.35 p.m. .. ~ 2 Otago, 4.6.43 p.m. .. .. 3 Wanganui, 4.8.12 p.m. .. .. 4 Tauranga .. .. •. .. 5 Paramata .. .. .. ..6 Manukau .. .. .. .. 7 SCOTT MEMORIAL CUP The annual race for cabin-class yachts for the Scott Memorial Cup was held on Saturday afternoon In a strong northeasterly wind and a heavy sea. The course was from Lyttelton to Port Levy by way of the whistling buoy. Bona (A. H. Vivian, 24min) was the winner, Dorade (28min) being second. The race wljich was to have been held by the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club yesterday from Port Levy to Lyttelton, via Sumner Bay, was abandoned because of the north-west gale.
