ARAB DELEGATES FOB LONDON

NO PROGRESS WITH SELECTION

(Received 2, 7.5 p.m.)

LONDON, December 31

It is officially reported from Aden that the Imam of Yemen has nominated his son, Saifel Hussein, to represent him at the Palestine conference in London.

The selection of representatives of the Palestine Arabs is at a standstill. The Government will allow reasonable time, but in default of representation will fix its policy of its own accord.

The Jerusalem correspondent of “The Times” states that the French authorities have refused to allow members of the disbanded higher Arab Committee to go to Lebanon to interview the Grand Mufti, who is unwilling to leave there in case he may not be allowed to return. It may therefore be necessary for the leaders to meet in Egypt without the Mufti.

BRITISH BUDGET POSITION

ESTIMATED DEFICIT OF £75,000,000 ADDITIONAL ARMAMENTS

Expenditure

LONDON, December 30.

It is estimated that Britain’s Budget position now shows a deficit of £75,000,000, compared with last year.

If the expenditure in the last quarter of 1938-39 does not exceed last year’s expenditure, and if revenue increases in accordance with the increase anticipated for the whole year, the Budget will balance, but with the additional armaments expenditure, it is now believed that the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon) will need £200,000,000 new revenue., If half of the additional amount is Borrowed, thereby doubling the original borrowing programme for 1939-1940, there will remain £ 100,000,000 to be obtained by taxation.
