CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUNDS IN SYDNEY
BIG ANNUAL EXPENDITURE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEQHA.It.) AUCKLAND, December 31. A former Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman E. S. Marks, C.8.E., who arrived by the cruise ship Narkunda, said that the highUght of civic affairs in Sydney is that the city is about to borrow £1,000,000, to be spent at the rate of £IOO,OOO yearly for 10 years on improvement works. Another outstanding feature of Sydney activities is a children’s playground movement, on which £20,000 a year is being spent. About 5000 children are being taught arts and crafts, in addition to sports and games in the playgrounds, each of which is controlled by two men and two women experts. “The experts have said that Sydney is in the forefront of the world in this work," he added.
