AUSTRALIA'S DEFENCE PREPARATIONS

RECRUITING IN PROGRESS (**»»» J.SSOCIATIO* TKUOX4IC.) AUCKLAND, December 31. Once a member of Major-General Russell’s staff on Gallipoli, Brigadier P. M. McFarlane, C.8.E., of the Australian Staff Corps, arrived by the Narkunda to-day. He is now commandant of Western Australia.

On a health cruise, he was unprepared to discuss Australia’s defence preparations, but said that a total force of 70,000 was required. He was confident that Western Australia would find its quota. “When I left, recruiting was in full swing,” he said, and added that Fremantle was regarded as one of the best defended ports in the Empire.
