CRICKET

GOOD SCORES IN JUNIOR GRADE

NORTH CANTERBURY MATCHES Scores of 100 not out and 88 not out by junior B grade cricketers were the features of the North Canterbury SubAssociation’s competition matches in the week-end. H. Pearce, who made 100 not out for Kaiapoi, played a sound innings, hitting several sixes. JUNIOR A GRADE Eyreton v. Rangiora

Playing at Dudley Park, Rangiora in the first innings made 150 runs. A. Lockhart was top scorer with 33 and B. Bennett followed closely with 28. Other scores were W. Steel 21, D. Lander 17. E. Withers 14, and R. Withers 12.

Bowling for Eyreton, T.- Giles took three wickets for 29 runs and A. G. Hassall four , wickets for 43.

Eyreton had lost two wickets for 98 runs at close of play.

JUNIOR B GRADE Fernside A v. Kaiapoi

Kaiapoi in the first innings declared with five wickets down for 181 runs. H. Pearce played a splendid innings, making 100 not out. Pearce hit several sixes. B. Carter made 24 before he was bowled by A. Milne, and L. Anderson, who was bowled by J. Sinclair, made 15. A. Milne took one wicket for 21 runs, J. Sinclair took one wicket for 23, and D. Milne took two wickets for 67. Fernside in the first innings were all out for 78 (K. Milne 22. A. Milne 14, and D. Milne 12).

Bowling for Kaiapoi, N. Eves took three wickets for 15 runs and H. Pearce took two wickets for 15. Fernside B v. Woodend

Playing at Woodend, Fernside declared with eight wickets down for 225 runs. The top scorer was J. Smith, who made 88 not out. Smith hit 13 fours. E Minchington batted well to make 53 before he was caught by S. Smith. W. Chambers made 24 and A. Smith 15.

Bowling for Woodend, J. Eder took two wickets for 44 and S. Smith took three wickets for 46. Woodend at close of play had lost five wickets for 128 runs (A. Judson 38, J. Eder 28, and H. Little 42 not out).

Bowling for Fernside, J. Smith took three wickets for 37.

WIN FOR BLACKWELLS

The annual cricket match between Kaikoura and Blackwells took place on the Takahanga Domain. Kaikoura. Blackwells won by an innings and 16 runs.

Kaikoura, in the first innings, made 181 (Hurdley 36, Reid 36, Warner 40, not out). Bowling for Blackwell’s, Nee took two for 23, Ballinger two for 37, and Berry two for 12, Kaikoura, in the second innings, made 176 (W. McLennan 60, D. McLennan 47, McArthur 24, Maloney 14). NO SERIOUS FIRES FOR 12 MONTHS

REPORT FROM RANGIORA BRIGADE Twelve months passed without a serious fire in Rangiora. A report from the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade lor the year showed that there had been only nine alarms for fire through the period from January 1 to December 31 in 1938.

NEW YEAR’S EVE IN RANGIORA

New Year’s Eve in Rangiora was exceptionally quiet, the new year being ushered in without other celebration than the blowing of whistles, the blowing of a lew car horns, and the ringing of bells in various parts of the town. The usual bonfires were lit and fireworks put to use to mark the passing of the old year; but the streets were free from the crowds which usually gather for the occasion.

COMPETITIONS AT KAIKOURA

The weather was not particularly favourable during the holidays for bowls at Kaikoura, and competition games were not very far advanced. The following games were played:— Pairs Competition—H. J. Barratt and H. Llanfear beat F. Minchen and J. C. Smith, 23-19; W. J. Bevis and S. T. Harris beat D. M. Jack and T. Rothwell, 27-18; E. Stokes and J. Washington beat R. P. McLaughlin and R. L. Withers, 22-21. Second Round—A. Trudgean and W. Gordon beat H. Llanfear and H. J. Barratt, 28^10. Rinks Competition—F. Smith. W. Vaughan, B. Dooley, and R. Strahlbeat W. Main, D. M. Jack, E. W. Jones, and J. Washington, 28-14.

FRIENDLY MATCH AT KAIAPOI

A friendly bowling match was played on the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club green against three rinks from the Runanga Club. The Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club won by two games to one. The results were as follows (Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club skips first):— Simpson lost to Taylor, Robson 16, Spearman 14; Mealings 21, Warburton 19.

Stewart and son (Parnassus) have been on a holiday visit to Mr P. Butler, Medbury. Mr W. Broad (Auckland) is spending a holiday in Medbury. Mrs A. W. J. Prestidge (Lower Hutt), who has been staying with relatives in Medbury, left recently to visit Mr and Mrs J. F. Topp, Puaha, Little River. Mr Karl Brooker has been on a holiday visit to his parents, Mr and Mrs H. Brooker, Medbury.

TENNIS CLUB’S DANCE AT KAIKOURA

There was a very large attendance at the dance held in the Drill Hall. Kaikoura, by the St. Michael’s Tennis Club. Mr F. Taylor’s Rhythm Band played the music, with extras by Mrs W. D. Sabiston, Mrs G. Hoadley, and Mrs S. Wareham. Mr H. Waghorn was master of ceremonies. The miniature Monte Carlo was won by Miss C. Keehan and Mr N. Guthrie, and the lucky spot by Miss I. Gibson and partner.

CHESS AT LINCOLN CONCLUSION OF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP The championship of the Lincoln Chess Club was won by R. Harris, with a margin of three points over the runner-up, S. M. Bray, who was the only one to beat the champion. The runner-up’s position was closely contested, the issue being in doubt until all matches were played. The scores of the leading players were as follows: —R. Harris 11, S. M. Bray 8, S. Banks 7, J. W. Calder 7.

RADIO TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS

Through arrangements made with Mr E. J. Williams, postmaster, at Kaikoura, Mr and Mrs C. A. Jensen had a very clear conversation with relatives in Liverpool. England, by radio telephone. The reception was excellent, considering the long distance.

Mr W. F. Perrin was in conversation with relatives in London recently, and said that the conversation was as clear as telephonic communication with Christchurch.

The Arch Druid (Bro. C. Brown) presided at a meeting of the Star of Anglesea Druids’ Lodge at Lincoln, Sick pay to the amount of £8 was passed for payment. Grand Lodge officers, of Canterbury, gave an address. Visitors from Ethelbert, Pioneer 1 , and Ellesmere Lodges were present.

EUCHRE AND DANCE AT LINCOLN

A euphre party and dance were held recently in the Lincoln Public Hall to commemorate the handing over of the Lincoln Hall to the residents of Lincoln. Mr J. W. Stewart’s orchestra played the music for the dancing and Mr B. P. Moran was master of ceremonies. Monte Carlos were won by Mr M. Stewart and Mrs Anne Hopley (Eangiora), and Mr A. E. Davis and Miss N. L. Peryman. Successful players in the card room were Mr R. Miller and Mrs A. Buck.
