THE STOCK EXCHANGES

MARKETS LIFELESS AT CLOSE

PRICE LEVELS GENERALLY MAINTAINED

The Affiliated Stock Exchanges throughout New Zealand closed for the Christmas-New Year vacation yesterday.

Local markets at the close were lifeless and there was only a small turnover in a few stocks.

Price levels generally were well maintained,

Buyers of Australian Glass raised their bids to £5 6s without attracting sellers. British Tobaccos (cum dividend) recovered to 50s 3d, and there were further unsupported tellers at that price. Broken Hill Proprietary were firm on buyers’ offers 57s 6d. Buyers of Colonial Sugars raised their bids to £49, but sellers wanted £49 15s. Taranaki Oil were fractionally weaker at 9s 9d, buyers staying in at that figure, sellers at 9s lid. Woolworths moved up to 225, and Woolworths (N.Z.) were fractionally firmer at 19s, market closing 18s lOd buyers, 19s Id sellers. Grey River had dealings at 17s and 17s 4d, closing quotations 16s lOd buyers, 17s 2d sellers. New River were a shade stronger at 9|d, market closing 9d buyers, 9id sellers. - Sales on 'Change £ s. d.
