PAY-OUT TO MINERS
♦ HOLIDAY WAGES ON WEST COAST fTHC PRESS Special Service. 1 GREYMOUTH, December 22. Coal miners on the West Coast, for the first time in the history of the industry in New Zealand, will receive at the end of the week payment for holidays, in addition to their ordinary wages. The amount of holiday pay varies according to the number of shifts worked by each man during the last 12 months, but the total amount which will be paid out under this heading at mines in the Grey district will be about £IO,OOO. This sum will include nearly £SOOO at the State mines, about £9OO or £IOOO at the Wallsend mine, £I4OO at Blackball, and £560 at Roa. With the addition of the ordinary fortnightly pay at the State mine the total pay-out there is expected to be almost £IO,OOO. Holiday pay will also be received by dredge workers in the Grey district. The Christmas pay-out to men employed by the Public Works Department in South Westland, exclusive of those at Jackson’s Bay, will amount, it is believed, to about £4OOO.
