ITALIAN CLAIMS IN AFRICA
HERR HITLER MAY BE PEACEMAKER
TERRITORIAL CHANGES NOT FAVOURED
(TJNITED PRE 39 A.S3OCIATIOW—COPTRIGHT.) (Received December 21, 2 p.m.) BERLIN, December 20. Herr Hitler has decided on strong decisive action as a peacemaker between Italy and France before Mr Chamberlain proceeds to Rome. The Foreign Office is now inquiring the minimum demands of Italy and the maximum concessions of France. Germany will not support territorial changes in Tunis, but will back up the demand for equality of Italian residents.
Germany favours the sale of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway to Italy at a fair price and supports Italy's Suez Canal demands. Germany, however, does not support the claim to Corsica, Nice, and Savoy. Herr Hitler, by intervention, hopes to steal Mr Chamberlain's thunder and prove himself again the dominating figure in Europe. A message from Tunis says that Übaldo Rey, a Fascist leader, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment and fined £3 for inciting a riot against the French Administration on December 8.
