MAGISTRATE'S COURT
WEDNESDAY (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) REMANDED
Arthur Aloysius Barnard, a carpenter, aged 30. was remanded until today for medical examination. He was charged with having assaulted Charles Alexander George Keay, and with having been found drunk in a public place.
ON LICENSED PREMISES ■&mes\, ordered to pay costs on a charge of having been found on licensed premises after hours, to which he pleaded guilty. LABOUR DEPARTMENT CASE
Vere Gourley, manageress of "The Milky Way" milk bar, was charged by the Labour Department with having failed to keep a wages and time book in the prescribed form for employees between August 27 and September 29. Mr S. E. McGregor represented the department, and Mr D. E. Wanklyn appeared for Mrs Gourley, who pleaded not guilty. Mr Wanklyn criticised the form of the information, stating that there was no indication as to which assistant the charge concerned. Mr McGregor replied that the wages and time book did not record details of the hours of work or the kind of employment done by the four assistants. Evidence for the department showed that the hours worked in the weekly periods between the dates mentioned had not been entered in the book, except in the case of one employee, whose record, however, did not cover all the periods. Mr Wanklyn submitted that the offence was entirely trivial. There was no question of short payment or incorrect hours being worked. It was understood that when employees signed for their wages it was their obligation to sign the number of hours worked. This had been brought to their notice, but they had not done so. A fine of £2 and an order for costs was imposed, the Magistrate commenting that the book had not been kept as required by the law.
