INSTRUCTION IN CHILD WELFARE

WORK OF PSYCHOLOGIST DISCUSSED REPRESENTATIVE MEETING AT RANGIORA To determine and co-ordinate the district work of Miss Doreen Dolton, lecturer in child psychology, under the auspices of the Association for Country Education, representatives of those areas included in her itinerary held a meeting at Rangiora on Tuesday evening. Fully 50 yere present. Mr G. G. Beattie presided.. The number and situation of study groups to be formed in the district was discussed, and it was decided that each group make its, own financial arrangements for the payment of fees for Miss Dolton’s lectures.

Further reference to the nursery school which will be established at the Rangiora High School hostel was made by Miss Dolton. She observed that at the moment there was little money to finance the project, and that the success of the scheme would be dependent on the support given it by the public. Miss Dolton added that the cost for one child at the nursery school a day would run out at some fee below 2s. Children from two to five years would be accepted. That a nursery school at Rangiora would be of immense value to the district was the opinion expressed by Mr Beattie. In addition to benefiting parents and infants, it would also provide practical experience for girls at the high school taking the home science course, he said. He appealed to the meeting to support the scheme, as, in his opinion, it was one that deserved the support of all parents. MAGISTRATE’S COURT AT RANGIORA UNLICENSED DRIVER FINED For driving a motor-car without being the holder of a driver’s licence, Nicholas John Wall was fined £l2 and ordered to pay costs, in default 30 days’ imprisonment with hard labour, when he appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Rangiora yesterday. Sergeant O. P. McEntee said that defendant already had his driver’s licence cancelled. On March 4, at Kaiapoi, he was convicted and fined £6 for driving without being the holder of a driver’s licence. It seemed to him that Wall was ignoring the instructions given by the Court.

Mr A. C. Fraser, who represented the defendant, declared that Wall did not flout the authority of the Court deliberately. The defendant had really driven on his own property to round up a flock of sheep, but had to traverse a certain part of the road before he could do this. A collision between a motor-car and a motor-truck at the intersection of High and Percival streets had its sequel when Frederick Joseph Breach, driver of the motor-car, was charged with failing to keep to the left of the centre line of the road when turning to-the right. Alan L. Lucas, driver of the motor-truck, was charged with having inefficient brakes and driving without due care and attention. Breach was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. Lucas was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs for having inefficient brakes. The other charge against him was dismissed. Robert Wynn le Valliant was fined £2 and was ordered to pay costs for driving in Ashley street without due cafe and attention-. It was stated in evidence that defendant had run into a telegraph post. Sergeant O. P. McEntee said there was nothing to show that defendant had been drinking and that he was satisfied Le Vaillant fell asleep while driving.
