HOUSES FOR OLD-AGE PENSIONERS
* TENDERS INVITED BY CITY COUNCIL Tenders for 16 of the 50 homes the Christchurch City Council intends to old-age pensioners will be called to-day, and will .be received until 10 a.m. on Monday, October 17. As yet the Local Government Loans Board has not considered the council’s application for permission to raise a loan of £ 25,000, but according to the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. J, S. Barnett), who has discussed the council’s proposal with Government officials in Wellington, it is inconceivable that anything will happen to change the council’s plans. The tenders will relate to four cottages, each of two units, to be built facing Sydenham Park, Cr. Barnett said that some of the cottages should be ready for occupation before the end of this year. There was no lack of demand for the cottages, for already more than 160 applications had been received. In the : selection of the tenants the council ; would be assisted by various social organisations that were in a position to know the needs of the applicants. If the tenders for the first four cottages were satisfactory, the council would waste no time in carrying its scheme‘to completion.
