LOW SCORING AT BLACKPOOL

ENGLISH ELEVEN PLAYS AUSTRALIA

SUCCESSFUL DOWLING BY AMAR SINGH

(Received September 2, 2 a.m.) LONDON, September 1. In the match between an English eleven and the Australians, England in the first innings made 132. Australia replied with 174, and at stumps the English eleven had made 33 for the loss of one wicket. Resuming today England had lost seven wickets for 76 runs at lunch. While wickets were falling yesterday, Worthington, played soundly Waite and McCormick were played with ease, but O’Reilly and Ward were deadly, making the ball turn sharply. , , J Hitting out when the last man, Duckworth, came in, Worthington was caught in the covers. The English team’s innings lasted 145 minutes. With the Australian score at 26 three wickets fell, Hassett being out first ball. , Amar Singh, a medium-paced bowler, swung the ball awkwardly and, .with the exception of Barnes, worried the Australians. His legbefore victims were beaten by pace from the pitch. , Australia, with eight wickets down, was still 8 runs short of the English total, but White and Ward, hitting freely, extricated Australia from a serious position. They added 50 for the ninth wicket. Amar Singh bowled unchanged for 25 overs, in which he took six wickets for 84 runs.

Edrich, in the half-hour that England batted before stumps, failed to break his run of failures against Australia.

When play was resumed to-day the wicket, which was not protected from the rain, was expected to assist the bowlers, as it did. The Englishmen were no more comfortable on to-day’s soft, turning wicket than yesterday. The spin bowlers were naturally in their element and the wickets fell cheaply.
