WAIMATE HIGH SCHOOL

TERM ATTENDANCES AFFECTED RECTOR’S REPORT RECEIVED Reference to the effect the wet weather and the measles epidemic have had on the attendances at the school this term was made by the rector of the Waimate High School (Mr M. Leadbetter) in his report to a meeting of the High School Board on Wednesday evening. The roll number was at present 177, made up of 95 boys and 82 girls, Mr Leadbetter said. The attendance during the term had been effected by the prevailing bad weather and, in common with many other schools, by the widespread measles epidemic. In accordance with health regulations some pupils who had been contacts had had to be excluded, while there had also been some cases. The absences this week had averaged about 30 a day. The rector also referred to the equipment for the new rooms at the school. “With the arrival a fortnight ago of the tables for the new staff room practically all of the equipment for the new rooms is to hand,” he said. “The new library room is none too large for all its purposes. The metalwork equipment is almost .complete. It is clear that the metalwork course is going to be one of the most valuable additions to our time-table.” It had been impossible to play football on the school’s ground, Mr Leadbetter said, and outside conditions had been such that the school’s activities had been sadly curtailed. Sport for the girls had also been handicapped by the .severe winter. The board granted permission for the New Zealand Methodist Young Women’s and Young Men’s Bible Class Movement to use the school buildings from December 30 to January 4, 1939. SCHOOL HONOURS BOARD GIFT OF WAIMATE OLD PUPILS An addition to the Waimate High School building was mentioned by the rector (Mr M. Leadbetter) in his report to a meeting of the Board of Governors of the school on Wednesday evening. “The new honours board has been placed on the wall of the corridor directly facing the front entrance,” said Mr Leadbetter. “The board is of oak with the school crest hand-carved in it. There is space for 40 years, 10 of which are already used, with the provision for extensions.” It was desired that the board should be the gift of the old pupils . of the school and already there had been a fine response from * the comparatively small number approached. Referring later to gifts made to the school since the last meeting of the board, Mr Leadbetter - said that the School was very fortuntae in having many persons interested in its welfare.
