TEMUKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING HELD SEVERAL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED Complaints that bees from a neighbouring apiary were troublesome to their stock were received from Messrs T. Sugrue and B. Howie at the monthly meeting of the Temuka Borough Council. It was decided to request the owner ot the bees to remove them. A decision was made by the council to ask the owner of a building at 90 Maude street ‘to have the building boarded up. The health inspector (Mr P. A. Wallwork) had reported that the building was a menace to public health. Mr Wallwork further reported that during July he had inspected one infectious disease case. The report of the borough poundkeeper (Mr R. A. Young) stated that he had impounded two cows and one horse in the nonth. The practice of some persons in leaving bobby calves tied to trees in North Town belt, while they waited for lorries to collect them, was spoken of by Qr. Hayhurst. It was decided to ask the poundkeeper to deal with any further offences. , A letter received from Mr H. Harrison, Green Hayes Orchard, complained about the condition of the entrance to his property on the east side of Murray street. The water which had accumulated there for some time was a nuisance, and Mr Harrison considered that two loads of shingle would put it right. The matter was referred to Mr T. Devine, the borough foreman, and he was instructed to refer the matter to the foreman of the Geraldine County Council. In making application for us grant of £SO. the Temuka Municipal Band thanked the council for its contribution towards the cost of the new uniforms. The grant was passed for payment. CHARGES OF FALSE PRETENCES PETROL OBTAINED FROM SERVICE STATIONS MAN CONVICTED AT COURT AT TIMARU Two charges of obtaining petrol by illegal methods were brought against a former insurance agept, WiUiam James Bowker, at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, yesterday, before Mr H. Morgan, .S.M. Bowker was charged with having, at Washdyke, on December 24, obtained, five gallons of petrol, valued at 10s 2 JO. from William Albert Field by falsely representing that he was a member of the family of Bowker. an business at Timaru, and with having at Timanu on January 17, obtained petrol valued at 13s 3d from Michael Cassidy by fraud. W A. Field, proprietor of a service station at Washdyke, gave evidence that accused called l at his station and said that he .was W. J. Bowker, of Bowker’s. Timaru, He fold, witness that he was short Of cash and asked for some petrol. Witness said to nim, “That is unusual, but I recognise an honest name and an honest face. i suppose it will be all right. Witness added that after being served with the petrol accused promised to call in and pay for it within a few daysEvidence was also given by Hugh Morrison, of Morrison’s petrol station, Strathallan street, about accused obtaining petrol from him. Mr L. M. Inglis. who appeared for accused, objected to this evidence, which he claimed was inadmissible as accused was not charged with obtaining petrol at Morrison’s station, ine Magistrate reserved his decision on the Giving evidence, accused said_ that in December last he was provincial organiser for an insurance company. He had an office in Timaru in the Commercial Bank buildings. Accounts for petrol and oil were to have been deducted from his retainer by the company, but they had not yet been cleared up. He. had not claimed to be associated with the firm previously known as Bowker and Company,.and now Foote and Goodman. When asked who he was he had merely said that he was “Bowker—in business in.TiGiving evidence on the second charge. Michael Cassidy said that accused, when he was given six gallons of petrol, said he was Bowker, of the Colonial Mutual Insurance Company. Christchurch, and that he, was short of cash. He was satisfied, he said, that Bowker was guilty of a false pretence, and he accepted the evidence of the witness Cassidy in the second case. . On the first charge Bowker was fined £5 and ordered to pay costs, six weeks being allowed in which to pay, in default one month’s imprisonment. On the second charge Bowker was admitted to probation for one Traffic Breaches Annie Corrigan was fined £2, and ordered to pay costs, for driving a car at an excessive speed. On a charge of failing to give way to traffic approaching on the right, Jessie MacKehzie was fined £3. and ordered to pay costs. , Frank Stowell, jun.. was fined £3. and ordered to pay costs, for driving a car without due care and attention. EUCHRE PARTY HELD AT SEADOWN A euchre party under the auspices of the Seadown Women’s Institute was held recently. The winners of euchre were Mrs Hedley and Mr W. Cain, and of table tennis Miss R. Hide and Mr K. Sievright. Mr R. J. Edgar was master of ceremonies, and Miss C. Benbow (Tejmuka) played the music.
