OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service.! WELLINGTON, August 18. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by •the ’Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows; — Light to fresh south-westerly winds. .Weather cloudy to overcast and in places misty with occasional showers or drizzling rain, but gradually improving. Temperatures cool to moderate. Seas slight to moderate. WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:— Light to fresh southerly winds. Weather cloudy and with scattered rains at first, but improving. Temperatures cool to moderate. Seas slight to moderate. DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:— Mostly cloudy to overcast and with mist or fog In places. Rain probable at times in most districts, but generally light and scattered in the South Island. Temperatures cool to moderate. A shallow depression is crossing the Dominion while a slight secondary depression is approaching the southern portion. Pressure is high both ta the eist and over Australia. Winds —Rather variable with southwesterlies to southerlies gradually predominating. Force mainly light to moderate, but freshening at limes in exposed positions. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea —Moderate to fresh south-westerly winds and moderate to rather rough seas. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The day was line but dull in Christchurch yesterday. There was a southwesterly breeze, which freshened in the afternoon, and temperatures were colder. The maximum during the/day was 48.2 degrees. Rain fell during the evening. At 1 o’clock this morning the sky was overcast and there was a strong south-westerly wind. The temperature was 44 degrees and the barometer reading, 29.91 in, rising slowly. Meteorological observations taken at the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch, on August 18: —

IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—Unsettled weather, with passing showers and a moderate northwest wind, was experienced during the day. The maximum temperature was 59 degrees. The barometer was steady, and the reading at 5 p.m. was 29.95 inches. Wellington—The weather was clear early, but later cloudy.. Light rain fell in the afternoon, and a light to moderate north-westerly breeze prevailed. The minimum temperature on Wednesday night was 48.9 degrees, and the maximum yesterday was 56.7 degrees. At 3 p.m. the temperature was 47.8 degrees, and the barometer 29.720 inches. Dunedin—The weather yesterday was fine but cool with a moderate breeze from the south-west. The sky was overcast, and the temperature reached a maximum of 54 degrees. The barometer rose to 29.90 inches.
