CURRENT NOTES

Mrs John Deans (Kirkstyle, Darfield), who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs J. Paton, Rylands, Hastings, will return home to-day. Mrs Kenneth Murchison (Glenthorhe) will arrive in Christchurch to-day to visit Miss Jessie Wilkin, Fendalton. She and Mr Murchison will be guests at Warwick House during National Week. Mr and Mrs H. C. D. van Asch (Bealey avenue) will leave to-day for Wellington, where they will set out for a trip to the South Sea Islands. Mrs A. Vere Winchester (Cashmere Hills) is visiting her sister, Mrs T. H. Burr, Hastings. Mrs William Deans (Sandown, Darfield), who has been attending the annual conference of Women’s Institutes in Wellington, will arrive from the north this morning. Mr and Mrs Norman Wallace, who have been spending a holiday at Samoa and Norfolk Island, will return to Christchurch to-morrow. Mrs Moss Davis, mother of the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, celebrated her ninety-second birthday recently at her home in London. Mrs Davis, was a wellknown figure in Auckland for many years, and left with her husband, the late Mr Moss Davis, to live in London some years ago. She still takes a keen interest in New Zealand and its people. Lady Hosking (Gloucester street) left Wellington yesterday by the Rangitiki to join her son and daughter-in-law. Dr. and Mrs, John Hosking, in England. Mr and Mrs A. Low (Christchurch) will leave for Wellington to-night to join the Maunganui for a cruise to the South Sea Islands. Mrs R. G. Florence, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs A. S. Moffett (the Vicarage, Hinds), has now taken a flat at “Malmesbury,” Church line, Merivale. Mrs Guy Williams (Masterton), with members of the Tasman Cup golf team—Mrs Fullerton-Smith (Hunterville), Mrs David Crornbie (Wellington), Miss Jean Horwell (Timaru), and Miss Pat Helean (Hastings)—will leave Wellington by the Wanganella on Thursday for Sydney. Miss Valmai Fleming (Christchurch), also a member of the team, has been in Sydney for the last few months. A party of 22 tourists from America and Hawaii, who are louring New Zealand under the direction of Miss E. Sykes, arrived in Christchurch from the south last evening. They will be entertained this morning by the Canterbury (N.Z.) Travel Club and-will leave for the north to-night. Miss Betty Rutherford (Macdonald Downs, Hawarden), and Miss Helen Buchanan (Fendalton) will leave Christchurch on Wednesday night to join the Wanganella for Sydney, where they will play in the Australian women’s golf championship tournament. Miss Jocelyn Hornabrook (Masterton) and Miss Susie Collins (Wairarapa) will leave by the same ship to play in the tournament. Miss Joan Murchison (Glenthorne) will arrive in Christchurch next Saturday, and will be the guest of Mrs Arthur Thomson, Montreal street, for race week. Miss Katharine Hay (Pigeon Bay) will be a guest at Warwick House during Grand National Week. Miss Joyce Nolan (Wairoa) will be the guest of Mrs J. H. Williams, Heaton street, for race week. Miss M. K. Luck (St. Albans) has left for a visit to Auckland and Rotorua. A “Wild West” cabaret, in aid of the Plunket Society, will be held In the Caledonian Hall on Friday, August 12. A strong committee, of Which Mr Eric Million is chairman and Mr C. Rattray honorary secretary, have the preliminary arrangements well in hand, and there is already a brisk demand for tickets. Mrs J. Souter, secretary of the Domestic Workers’ Union, has been appointed secretary of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Federation of Labour. She succeeds Mr R. A. Brookes, who has resigned because of pressure of other work. Miss M. Lambie, Director of the Division of Nursing, arrived in Blenheim from Wellington yesterday to carry out an inspection of the ; Marlborough district. She gave an address at the Plunket Society’s silver jubilee annual meeting yesterday afternoon, and in the evening addressed all nursing sections at the Nurses’ Home. They will later visit Christchurch for National Week, Among the arrivals from Wellington this morning will be Mrs Ada A. Holman, widow of Mr W. A. Holman, for seven years Premier of New South Wales. Mrs Holman Is a member of the Australian Institute of Writers and holder of the Jubilee Medal for literature. She is a regular contributor to the “Sydney Morning Herald,” and has wide interests. Mrs Holman is touring New Zealand under the auspices of the Spanish Medical Aid Committee, which at present is endeavouring to raise funds for an ambulance. Miss Portia Holman, daughter of Mrs Holman, who is a member of the Holborn Spanish Medical Aid Committee (London), has been in Spain for long periods since the present war commenced. Mrs Holman is a member of the Sydney Spanish Relief Committee. While in Christchurch she will address a meeting in the Trades Hall under the auspices of the Christchurch committee, and will meet a number of women’s organisations.

BUFFET DINNER

Mr and Mrs W. J. Mac Gibbon (St. Andrew’s terrace) gave an enjoyable little buffet dinner at their home last evening, and guests went on later to the annual staff dance of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. Mrs Mac Gibbon received her guests wearing a becoming frock of duck-egg blue matalasse, a trail of matching flowers on the ruched bodice being slightly lipped with cerise. The guests included Mr and Mrs C. H. Clemens, Mr and Mrs R. Powell, Mr and Mrs Norman Farrant, Mr and Mrs Trevor Clarkson, and Mr and Mrs Eric Watkins. ,
