MORE HEAVY RAIN AT HASTINGS

’ U’EESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.' HASTINGS, July 29. The whole of the Hawke’s Bay province had wintry weather to-day, and in various parts of the province there were heavy falls of snow. Dannevirkc, Waipukurau, and Norsewood were we-1 covered. At Hastings and Napier there were heavy falls of rain throughout the day. and at times it appeared that there would be further serious flooding, but the rain ceased to-night. Although the rain fell fairly steadily all day. the Esk Valley did not suffer extensively, the only trouble being surface water. The heaviest fall of snow was between Argyll East and Tikokino. It was reported that eight inches had fallen there during the day, and to-nigm snow was still falling. The roads the area were in a bad state, but not completely blocked. Dannevirke reported that by w o’clock six inches had fallen since 4 o’clock. The whole of the surrounding country was covered to a good depth. The roads round Dannevirke were covered, and the fall was of sufficient depth to bog cars. Motorists had great difficulty in travelling in the affected areas. Even with chains progress was slow, and a number of motorists travelling from Dannevirke to Waipukurau were forced to return to Dannevirke. Even heavier falls of snow than those at Dannevirke were reported from Norsewood and Matamau. The hill leading into Norsewood was almost impassable. Snow began to fall there at 4 p.m., and was still falling late tonight. There was no snow at Hastings. The early morning was fine, but rain began to fall at 10 o’clock, and continued almost without interruption until earVy in live evening. During the 24 hours from 5 p.m. on Thursday, 1.24 inches of rain fell at Hastings. In Napier the Cosmopolitan Club’s cellar was flooded to a depth of two feet.
