OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service..! WELLINGTON. July 29. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: South-west to south-east winds predominating, moderate mainly, hut freshening at times. Weather dull and very cold, with intermittent rain or snow. Seas rather rough to rough. r WEST COAST. The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:— Moderate to strong cast to northeast winds, reaching gale force at times. Weather dull and very cold, with occasional rain, and on the ranges snow. Seas moderate to rather rough. DOMINION The Dominion forecast is:— Weather cloudy to overcast, with intermittent rain in most districts, snow in parts of the South Island and the high levels of the north; mainly fair, however, in the extreme north and south. Temperatures very cold, and some hard irosts probable m the southern portion of the South Island. Yesterday’s depression has moved awav eastward, but a secondary has formed to the west of Cook Strait. Pressure Is rising in the south, but is relatively low across the North Tasman. Winds —Westerlies in the far north, elsewhere east to south prevailing. ■ moderate to strong generally, and reaching gale force in places, especially about Cook Strait and the northern nart of the South Island. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rather rough to rough generally. Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate ■westerly winds and moderate seas in the northern portion, moderate to strong south-easterlies and moderate . to rough seas in the southern portion. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER Rain, sleet, and later flurries .of '’snow were experienced in Christchurch yesterday, when the weather was bitterly cold. It was not until the evening, however, that the snow lay on the ground, but about half an inch fell up to 11 p.m. The light wind from the south-west was very keen, and the maximum temperature during the day was only 38.3 degrees, the lowest for some time. At 1 a.m. the night was clear, with a light covering of snow on the ground. The temperature was . 28, and there was a light southwest wind.
