AUSTRALIA PLAYS SOMERSET
HOME BATSMEN BEGIN BADLY SIX WICKETS DOWN FOR 72 RUNS (Received July 28, 1 a.m.) LONDON, July 27. The Australians to-day began a match against Somersetshire at Taunton. The game started promptly after showers earlier in the morning. The teams are:— Somerset—E. F. Longrigg (captain). Lyon, R. J- O Meyer, C J. Barnwell, F. S. Lee, H. T. F. Dus , H. Gimblett, W. H. R. Andrews, A. W. Wellard, W. T. Luckes, H. L. Hazell. Australia —D. G. Bradman ( ca P* tain), S. J. McCabe, A. L. Hassett, C. L. Badcock. A. S. Barnes, A. G. Chipperfield, F. A Ward, W. J. O’Reilly. C. W. Walker, L. 08. Fleetwood-Smith, E. S, White. Longrigg won the toss and Somerset batted. . , .... Somerset lost two wickets within 10 minutes and four were down for 41. Lee was out to a catch at second slip, and Buse was run out by Hassett’s smart return. . McCabe pulled a muscle in his right thigh and left the field, and Barnes came on to bowl. Meyer was batting confidently, but after 20 minutes hooked FleetwoodSmith and was splendidly caught on the edge of the square-leg boundary. Lyon, who is playing his first season since his return 'from East Africa, batted in a polished manner in the early overs, but when O’Reilly and Fleetwood-Smith found their length he was uneasy and mistimed his drives. He gave a good high catch at deep mid-off. White in his second over btjwled the patient left-hander, Longrigg. Rain stopped play at 12.45 p.m. Play was resumed at 1.10 p.m., when Gimblett was easily caught in the covers off a shockingly crude stroke.
