WAGES FOR COMING SEASON (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, July 27. After a conference between Mr R. Eddy, representing the New Zealand Workers’ Union, Mr W. H. Nicholson, representing the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation, and Mr J. W. Butcher, Government Statistician, shearing rates for the 1938-39 season were announced to-day. The rates are on a sliding scale in accordance with wool prices. They are:— Shearers shearing by machine, not less than 2Ss 6d per 100 with rations; shearing lambs, similar rates; hand shearing, not less than 31s per 100 with rations. In cases where shearers find rations, an allowance of 4s a day is to be paid. For shearing stud sheep and hogget rams, rate and a half is to be paid, and for other rams double ordinary rates. Shed hands’ rates are: Pressers, by the week £4 4s 6d, and by the hour 2s IJd. Cooks for 12 men or under, £4 14s 6d a week, or ISs 3d a day if employed for less than seven days. Where more than 12 men are employed, the wages are tp be increased by 2s 6d a week for each additional man to be cooked for. Where the number exceeds 18 men an assistant is to' be employed, and where more than 28 men the rate is to be by mutual agreement. The cook’s assistant is to get £3 19s 6d a week, or 15s 6d a day if employed for less than seven days. Except in cases otherwise provided, rations are to be provided as well.
