A verdict that death was due to toxaemia, resulting from burns received through falling into a fire when drunk, was returned to-day by the Coroner (Mr F. K. Hunt) at an inquest into the death of Ernest Charles Millar, a widower, aged 62, a former master mariner, of Grey’s avenue. Dr. J. W. Bartrum, of Auckland Hospital, said that Millar was extensively burnt on the arms, hands and face. His breath smelled strongly of spirits. He died five days later. An ambulance officer said that when he called for Millar, the latter appeared to be intoxicated. He had apparently been sitting on a chair in front of the fire and had dozed off and fallen forward into an open fireplace. •
