VISIT OF PRIME MINISTER

! DUE AT ASHBURTON ON TUESDAY OFFICIAL DINNER TO BE GIVEN Confirmation of the intention of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) to make an official visit to Ashburton on Tuesday evening during his b,ur of Canterbury, was received yesterday by the Ashburton Borough Council. Mr Savage will roach the Ashburton County from the south in the afternoon, and will inspect the Rangitata river diversion scheme at Klondyke before going to Methven. He will arrive at Ashburton at 5.30 p.m., and will be entertained to dinner by the Ashbimton Borough and County Councils. Mr Savage will later in the evening attend a concert to be given by Bloomfield's Imperial Harmonica Band at the-Radiant Hall, where he will be welcomed by the Mayor (Dr. G. I. Milier) and Mr W. Bryant (president of the Ashburton branch of the Labour Party, and president of the Mid-Canterbury Labour Representation Committee). The Prime Minister proposes to go 1o Christchurch after the concert and dance. A NEW RECORD ENTRIES FOR ASH BURTON COMPETITIONS A new record has been established by the Ashburton Competitions Society in entries received lor its annual festival. The total had exceeded 1120 up to yesterday compared with last year’s ’record of 993. The largest number of entries in any class is in the dancing section, there being 34 competitors in the highland fling under 10, and there are many classes averaging between 20 and 30 entries. Because of the limited accommodation, it is possible that the society might have to obtain the use of a third hall to stage all the classes. BASKETBALL ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION NINE-A-SIDE COMPETITIONS ARRANGED Provided that the representative fixtures against Rangiora are postponed until September 10. the junior A and B'gradc nJne*a-side competitions of the Ashburton Basketball Association wil 1 be Jield on August 6, and the senior A and B grade competitions, on August 13. according to the decision of the executive, which met on Tuesday evening. Mr A. Meredith presided, in the absence of the president (Mr S. G Macfarlane). The New Zealand Basketball Association advised that the Dominion tournament would start on August 31. It was decided /that the rounds of thel senior B and'yjunior A competitions should be completed by July 30 Miss Doak was -appointed manager and coach of the Ashburton representative team for the Dominion tournament, and Mr Macfarlane was appointed delegate to the conference which will be held in conjunction with the tournament at Timaru. • Draw for Saturday The following matches have been arranged for Saturday:— 1.45 p.m.—Senior B: High School v. High School Old Girls (Mrs Holland). 2 p.m.—Junior A: Technical v. Technical Old Girls (Miss Greaves). 3 p.m.—Lauriston v. McKenzies (Miss Doak). The Technical High School v High School Old Girls match will be played at a later date. 3.40 p.m.—Representative teams’ practice. HAEREMAI CLUB The programme at the fortnightly meeting of the Haeremai Club, Ashburton, last evening took the form of impromptu debates. Miss J. Cookson I presided. j The following subjects were submitted to the St. Stephen’s Literary and Social Club for a debate on August 10;—“That euthanasia should be legalised”; “That international sports have done more harm than good”; “That woman has gained more than she has lost through her entry into industry." Miss J. Cookson and Messrs B. Dellow and D. A. Bird were chosen to represent the Haeremai Club. The evening ended with table-tennis matches. WOMEN’S HOCKEY EFFORT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR TOURNAMENT TEAM To raise funds to meet the expenses of sending a team to the Dominion women’s hockey tournament at Gisborne in August, a closed day has been arranged by the Methven Club for next Saturday, when the final matches in the A section of the Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association will be played at Methven. Arrangements to this effect have been by the executive of the Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association, and the following draw has been arranged:—Lowcliffe v. Methven, at 1.45 p.m.; Hinds v. Wakanui, at 3 p.m. It is hoped to start a further round of the B section next week. Two games have yet to be played in the C section. Ashburton will play North Otago at Oamaru on August 6, and the annual six-a-side tournament will be played on August 13. Teams from the Ellesmere Sub-As-rociation will visit Ashburton on August 20. METHVEN MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TEAMS The following will represent the Methven Men's Hockey Club in its match against Baring Square at Ashburton on Saturday:—M. Walker, P. Williams, R. Hands, F Hands. N. Owen, Monica O’Reilly, I. Tyler, F. Young, J. Lawson. ASHBURTON PERSONAL NOTE Mr F. J. Chambers, who has been a patient in the Chalet Private Hospital, Dunedin, for some time, returned to Ashburton yesterday. -
