BREEDING OF QUAIL AND PHEASANT

♦ ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY’S DECISION The 4 breeding for liberation of 2000 Californian quail will be the principal objective of the game committee of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society this year and a permit is to be obtained to enable sufficient quail to be trapped for breeding purposes, according to a recommendation of the game committee which was approved at a meeting of the council of the society last evening. The annual meeting of the society had recommended that the breeding of pheasants be abandoned, but after discussion on the cost of breeding the council approved a recommendation of the committee as follows:—“ The rearing of pheasants for sale to other societies is approved provided first, that it does not take precedence of the quail breeding: and second, that the selling prices for delivery at March 31, 1939, are commensurate with the cost of production. It is recommended that the price charged shall not be less than 25s a brace for 100 brace lots and 30s a brace for lesser quantities.” A proposal was approved to pursue the endeavour to re-establish the grey duck, and authority will be sought to acquire, if possible within the district, further supplies of breeding stock.
