NEW VARIETY OF OATS
RESISTANCE TO WIND AND STORMS A report of an oat variety which for some time has been under trial by the Agronomy Division of the Department of Agriculture, was given the North Canterbury executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union by Mr J. W. D Hall yesterday. Much work was being done by the division in comparing old breeds of oats, not now in commercial use, with the varieties at present in use. Much success had been achieved by one variety, Resistance. This variety seemed to be better at standing up to wind and storm conditions than most varieties. Other speakers agreed that the Resistance strain seemed likely to prove valuable, especially in heavy country It was stated that 57 bushels of it had been distributed to farmers for trial, most of this going on to Southland properties.
